12 Fun Things to Do in St Lucia

The Best Attractions in St Lucia

Visiting St. Lucia is an enchanting journey to a tropical paradise that seamlessly blends natural beauty with vibrant culture.

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, this stunning island captivates visitors with its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and the iconic twin peaks of the Pitons rising dramatically from the sea.

From basking in the warm embrace of golden sands and exploring vibrant coral reefs while snorkeling, to indulging in local cuisine infused with the flavors of the Caribbean, St. Lucia offers a sensory experience for those wishing to escape the humdrum of city life. The island’s rich history and mix of French and British influences are evident in its architecture and local traditions.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation on secluded shores or thrilling adventures amidst the rugged landscape, a visit to St. Lucia promises a captivating blend of natural wonders and cultural delights that leave a lasting impression.

1. Hiking the Pitons

Things to do in St Lucia - Hike the Pitons

The Pitons are to St Lucia what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. They are the most photographed landmark on the island and for good reason.

Rising straight out of the sea, these ancient forest-clad plugs offer a majestic backdrop across the western coast of the island. Gros Piton stands a lofty 2,619 feet above sea level, and coupled with Petit Piton,  you are presented with the most exceptional views of the island once you reach the top.

Even though Gros Piton is the biggest of the two (2,619ft), it is easier to climb compared to Petit Piton (2,461ft). Guided tours up the Pitons are easily available and can be arranged from your hotel or you can book in advance. You can also go hiking without a guide if you prefer, but I’d stick to Gros Piton for those going solo.

Whatever you decide on, you’ll no doubt enjoy the views en-route and from the summit.

2. Zip Lining Through the Rainforest

Zip Lining through the rain forest in St Lucia

Gliding above the dense rainforest at high-speed is not for the faint-hearted. After walking through a pathway filled with exotic trees and plants, you’ll get strapped into a safety gear and harness, followed by a brief introduction on how to work the ropes.

The course consists of 12 different zip lines of various lengths and heights across the rainforest. The views are spectacular and worth any trepidation you might have with heights. The guys working at Treetop Adventure Park in Dennery are filled to the brim with energy, which you’ll feel grateful for when you’re battling to finish the final zip lines and need some final words of encouragement!

3. Visit Sulphur Springs and Mud Baths

Sulphur Springs in St Lucia

Dubbed the world’s only drive in volcano, these boiling hot pools of sulphur provide an insight into the island’s volcanic beginnings some 300,000 years ago. Before you arrive, you’ll most definitely smell it first, if you’ve been to Iceland you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Nearby you can treat your skin to some extra minerals by jumping in a mud bath so keep your swimwear at arm’s length!

4. Immerse yourself in nature at the Botanical Gardens

Diamond Waterfall, St Lucia

Nearby the Sulphur Springs lies the beautiful Botanical Gardens, home to a myriad of exotic plants and flowers. As you walk to the end of the nature trail you are greeted with the piece de resistance: the Diamond Waterfall.

Tip: This garden is located nearby the Sulphur Springs so visit these places together.

5. Eat what the locals eat

Seafood in St Lucia

Exploring a new place through its food is always a winning formula. National specialties include plantains, green figs, and salt fish. St Lucia is all about seafood, being on the ocean’s doorstep, it’s guaranteed to be nothing less than fresh, with most travellers enjoying local fish, mahi mahi, and snapper.  If you really want to indulge in seafood and soak up the local atmosphere and culture, do Fish Friday at Anse La Raye.

For something sweet try the chocolate produced on the island. Chocoholics might be keen to know there’s a tour called The Tree to Bar Experience where you learn how the farmers of St Lucia are being helped to return to cocoa bean production. Then you can work hard to make your own chocolate bar going through the history of chocolate makers, and eat what you make at the end!

If you’re a fan of rum you won’t be disappointed, visit the island’s only rum distillery and discover how the Caribbean’s favourite tipple is created.

6. Soak up the beach life

For location you can’t beat Anse des Pitons also known as Sugar Beach which is actually the name of the hotel which resides over it. This astonishingly beautiful beach occupies a dramatic location in the cleavage of the Pitons. Though if its fine, white sand looks out of place, you’re right in thinking so – it has been imported from Guyana, previously it used to be a black beach.

7. Visit Marigot Bay

Marigot Bay in St Lucia

With its gorgeous islet and natural harbour, it’s no surprise why Marigot Bay has become a hot spot for swanky apartments and yachts. It also provided the setting for the 1967 film Dr Dolittle, and toasting its success you’ll find a restaurant that goes by the same name. Arrive here just before the sunset and watch the whole landscape turn shades of gold – do this with a cocktail in hand!

8. Take a Boat Trip to Lover’s Rock

Boat cruise to Lover's Rock in St Lucia

Fans of Pirates of the Caribbean might recognise this natural arch from the film. It’s a beautiful example of Mother Nature working her magic. As the name suggests, this boat trip is perfect for couples as together you can sit back and listen to the waves break across the front of the boat and let the sound of ocean soothe your ears.

Amusingly, I was the only single person on this boat trip. While I did look a bit out of place, the friendly boat stuff made extra efforts so ensure my single self didn’t feel excluded!

9. Go Snorkelling & Explore Under the Sea

Snorkelling - Things to do in St Lucia

St Lucia is arguably even more beautiful under the sea, with a huge variety of marine life for you to explore, including coral reefs, turtles and innumerable tropical fish. The water is very clear, with visibility varying from 20ft to over 200ft, so for this reason, pack an underwater camera or Go Pro if you have one.

10. Visit Castries & the Market

Castries Food Market

The lively and colourful capital, Castries, deserves a visit so you can experience what the market has to offer. A hive of activity, it will probably be one of the most touristy places you visit due to the high volume of souvenirs you can buy. But don’t be put off, as this is the place to go if you want to experience local people and food, including a staggering array of fruits and spices.

11. Talk to the Locals!

Castries Market, St Lucia

When you’re in a place that is popular for its resorts, it can be easy to miss the locals, that’s why it’s ever more important to get out of your resort. Talking to the locals enables you capture the spirit of the island and taste the real St Lucia.

If you really want to delve into another subculture you could climb Mount Gimie, the tallest mountain in St Lucia where a few Rastafarians reportedly live at the top. It’s said they are vegetarians and lead a very self-sufficient lifestyle. It seems plausible.

12. Dance at a Street Party

If there’s one thing St Lucian’s can do, it’s dance and it appears to come as naturally to them as breathing and sleeping. Their innate rhythm is something to be seen, and there’s no better arena than heading to a street party! On a Friday night you’ll be able to head to a few, with the most popular being at Gros Islet.

Where to stay in St Lucia

St. Lucia offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. Here are some popular areas to stay in St. Lucia:

Soufrière: This charming town is situated on the southwest coast and is known for its proximity to the famous Pitons, volcanic spires that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Soufrière offers upscale resorts, boutique hotels, and a more relaxed atmosphere.

  • If you’re looking for luxury and the best view of the Pitons, than Jade Mountain Resort is your answer.
  • For those after an authentic an memorable experience at a more affordable price point, I recommend staying at Green Fig Resort & Spa. This place also has majestic sea views that encompasses the Pitons.

Rodney Bay: Located in the north of the island, Rodney Bay is a bustling tourist hub with a wide range of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and shops. It’s a great choice for travelers who want easy access to nightlife and water sports activities.

Marigot Bay: Nestled along a picturesque bay, Marigot Bay is known for its tranquil beauty and upscale resorts. It’s an ideal choice for a romantic getaway or a peaceful retreat.

  1. Wow! What an incredible looking place. The pitons are postcard worthy in every sense of the word! Another great article Shing and another reason for me to be jealous of you. As soon as my bank balance looks healthier I’d love to visit the Caribbean. X

  2. I’ve been to Iceland before and loved all the volcanic activity, so I think you’ve just swayed me with this post to visit St Lucia after drawing such a comparison! That smell… there’s nothing quite like it!

  3. Hi Shing,

I am from this remarkably beautiful country St. Lucia, and I must say you mentioned a variety of exciting things one can do.
I have done the Tet Paul Nature trail and my description of it is heavenly!

Do hope you visit this piece of paradise because it is nothing but breathtaking.

  4. EVERYONE HAS THEIR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO, SEE & EXPERIENCE IN ST LUCIA.

SO FAR MY FAVORITE IS THE FOOD AND DRINKS, I LOVE THE DIVERSITY, ALL THE FLAVORS & COLORS.

ST. LUCIA IS A MUST VISIT CARIBBEAN ISLAND.

  5. I’m going to St. Lucia in a couple of weeks. I will definitely hike the Pitons. I love your photographs and outfits. Did you actually hike or drive up? I’m thinking about what’s appropriate to wear to Pitons but also what will look good for photos when I get to the top. Also shoes to wear. Thoughts?

  6. Hi Shing,

I came across your blog while doing research on some of the things that guests are really interested in doing while in St. Luica. I love your writing and i can really appreciate this blog. Thankful that you had a wonderful time in St. Lucia.

I really appreciate that you’re spreading word about or little paradise. I hope you visit St. Lucia again soon.

  7. Hi Shing,
I am starting to research my next birthday trip. Each year I try to be in a new country then. 2 years back was Norway, and last year was Trinidad. Here’s why I am thinking of St Lucia this time: I saw a video from CBS about how the people there have always liked country music and still play the older songs in some bars, George Jones, Johnny Cash etc…..

Did you run across any country singers in any of the places you went to while in St Lucia? Thanks for any advice.

  8. Hello thank you for your awesome and informative blog. We are looking forward to a vacation on St. Lucia. Which beach offers the best of all worlds (sand/sun/food/drink/shopping)? We love sightseeing but also want to stay on the beach where we can walk to restaurants/bars/shopping. Thanks!

    1. Hi Heather, glad to hear you’ve found my blog useful! Hmmm I think in terms of restaurants and shops and pretty views, Marigot Bay could be the winner for you. I think Sugar Beach has the most beautiful views though of the Pitons and great for snorkelling – but maybe better for visiting….? There are a lot of beaches but I think these two are the best. There are also some that are attached to resorts that require entry fees so bear that in mind. Pigeon Beach is nice and it costs $10 because there’s also a park attached so I recommend going for walking and scenic views.

Hope this is useful and enjoy St. Lucia!

  9. Great Post ! I have read your other posts which are really informative for any traveler before arriving on st lucia. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful informative information on the blog.
