About The Culture Map

We showcase the inspiring diversity of our world

We are a community of travellers who celebrate the diversity of the world by sharing cultural and adventurous experiences, wondrous places, and personal travel tales.

We talk about the things that we believe make our world special and interesting, from the leg-rowing fishermen of Inle Lake to the stone-carved temples of Mamalluparum, from London’s literary landscapes to Brutalist architecture in Paris, from a cathedral built inside a mosque to a city that started life as a penal colony.

Fisherman, inle lake

Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.

Meet the founder

the culture map blog

Shing lives in London after growing up in Yorkshire.

Travelling has always been in her blood. Having an Irish mother and a Chinese father, she grew up learning about her heritage and relished in the diversity and differences between these two cultures.

As soon as she was able to work at sixteen, every penny she saved went towards travelling. She began by going on European train journeys with her twin brother, then when she turned twenty-one she went to China to teach English. During this time she discovered how much she enjoyed solo travelling. Since those early days she has travelled to over 60 countries across six continents.

These days, she still loves to travel but also prioritises other things in life and finds a lot more value in things that are on her doorstep, especially in London.

Outside of travelling, she has a BA in Creative Writing and an MA in Human Rights and Social Justice. Most people choose a post-grad course that’s related to their under-grad but that might tell you something about her personality and interests which are always evolving.

Thanks for tuning in,

Shing
