I’d describe myself as pretty liberal, but coming from a catholic (turned Buddhist) mother, and a Chinese Christian father my liberalism was slow in gaining momentum.
The word ‘sex’ was a completely foreign word growing up, and certainly not an act used by the ‘good’ and ‘respectable’ characters of society.
Frustratingly, this parental censorship led me to believe until the age of nine that I was delivered in a napkin down a chimney to my parents by a Stork (like how you see in the cartoons). And when I finally discovered that I was thrust into this world from my mother’s uterus, I deduced the only possible orifice was from her bottom.
Hmmm where am I going with this digression, you ask? Well the point I’m making is that whilst sexuality need not run around like an orgy of rampant rabbits, neither should it be banished between the sheets merely for the necessity of reproduction. Instead a great way to explore the different facets of sex is by hitting the entrance of a sex museum which goes to great lengths to illustrate the history of sex in the most creative ways. These museums are often sold short, described as being a tacky subgroup of porn, and while for many this may be true, there’s also a selection of sex museums in the world advocating sensuality.

Prague’s Sex Machines Museum

Inside the Sex Machine’s Museum – Is big always better?
There’s a whole room dedicated to BDSM – but with a name like ‘Sex Machine Museum’ surely you wouldn’t expect anything less. This place is the créme de la créme for people with severe fetishes for leather, gags and masks; and still a pretty fun place for those who want a good giggle at how ‘the other people live’. The only downside to this museum is its rather small size; but if you have money to spare, and want to see scary sexual appliances then please do enter!
Paris’ Musée de l’Erotisme

When porn had a little less colour…
Well the people who say sex dries up after children: take heed from these two geriatric lovers at the Museum of Eroticism ! This place is 6 floors of pure unadulterated fun – from 1920s film and photography, to Aztec fertility idols, this museum has it all.

A lovely collection of porcelain penis’ for the mantelpiece at home
China’s Sex Museum in Tong Li

My friend Toby is very secure in his sexuality ![]()
Who would expect the best sex museum in the world to be in China? After all they’re hardly known for their sexual dominance, but Tong Li’s sex museum is another reason to add China to your bucketlist. There is a prolific amount of erotic sculpture in the museum’s extensive garden area, and as you can see from the photographs, they are not the kind of quintessential garden sculptures fit for a family day out! This museum brilliantly reveals the different attitudes towards sex over the dynasties in all their particularity and humour. It is a must for anyone travelling inside the Jiangsu province.
The thing I like most about this museum is that it feels taboo. How ever did China let this one past its conservative eye?

It’s a man’s world aka Phallocentric!

Excellent post. I was surprised to see the Chinese statuary survived the Cultural Revolution.
There was a British Sex museum in Blackpool a some years ago. It got shut down after a few weeks. The influence of the local council being more powerful than Mao apparently…..

July 22, 2012 at 2:30 pmI was surprised too! Either that or Mao was a closet gay who had a penchant for big penises – like most dictators then!

A museum which is isn’t on the list because I haven’t been (yet!) is the Phallological museum in Reykjavik – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icelandic_Phallological_Museum !
