West Lake – Exploring China’s Most Famous Lake

West Lake, Hangzhou

Described by Marco Polo as “the finest and most beautiful city in the world”, Hangzhou still offers a glimpse of old China despite the attention it receives from tourists.

Its mist shrouded shores are lined with landscape gardens, pagodas, teahouses and classic pavilions with names like Moon Lake and Calm Lake to highlight its charm.

West Lake, Hangzhou

More recently, West Lake captialises on its beauty and large expanse of water by hosting elaborate concerts across the surface of its vast body. I wanted to see the show Impressions of West Lake directed by Zhang Yimou who was responsible for the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, but I couldn’t afford a ticket so I did something a bit cheeky instead….

I seized the opportunity of watching it in an area a little further away for free by sneaking though a closed gate (I really shouldn’t recommend doing this…. so shhhhhhh you didn’t hear it from me!).

While I didn’t have the best seat so to speak, the production was so big and elaborate, it could be seen from far away. The lights shone so brightly it lit up the whole sky, and reflected off the beautiful lake.

Hangzhou Botanical Garden

Another place of great attraction is the Hangzhou Botanical Garden in the northwest end of West Lake.

There is a research wing in the garden where studious attention is given to the cultivation of plants and protection of the environment. You’ll find a vast array or beautiful plants. A great emphasis of conservation surrounds West Lake which is why it was recently announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a landscape that perfectly and harmoniously connects people to nature.

Exploring Hangzhou, China

Head to the top of Leifeng Pagoda

Leifeng Pagoda, West Lake

You can’t miss the towering presence of Leifeng Pagoda, which offers panoramic views of West Lake. The pagoda has a fascinating history and is beautifully illuminated at night. Check out its association with the Legend of the White Snake.

Climb to the top of the pagoda to enjoy the views from different levels. The pagoda has a unique architectural design, and each floor has exhibits and viewpoints.

Lingyin Temple

Explore Lingyin Temple, one of the most celebrated Buddhist temples in China. The temple complex includes various halls, grottoes, and serene surroundings.

While it’s not located directly around West Lake, and you’ll need to get a bus or take it taxi, it is the number one thing to do in Hangzhou along with exploring West Lake.

Where to stay in West Lake / Hangzhou

Continually on a budget, I stayed in Wushanyi International Hostel which has to be one of the nicest hostels I’ve stayed at – you wouldn’t even think it was a hostel because it’s nicer than many hotels too.

Are you planning a trip to West Lake in China?
